Jai Ganapati Sadguna Sadan,

Karivar Badan Kripal,

Vighna Haran Mangal Karan,

Jai Jai Girijaalaal

Glory, glory, all glory to you, O Ganesha; to you the entire universe pays respect.  You are the exterminator and deliverer of all pairs of opposites (such as joy and sadness, birth and death, attraction and repulsion, and so on).

Jai Jai Jai Ganapati Ganaraaju,

Mangal Bharana Karana Shubha Kaajuu,

Jai Gajbadan Sadan Sukhdaata,

Vishva Vinaayaka Buddhi Vidhaataa

Glory to you, O Shambhu’s son and Gauri’s delight, because you are the destroyer of all impediments and the deliverer of all from the cycle of birth and death. Glory to you, O head of Shiva’s minions, bestower of delight on all your devotees, teacher of all and intellect operator!

VakraTunda Shuchi Shunda Suhaavana,
Tilaka Tripunda Bhaal Man Bhaavan,
Raajata Mani Muktana Ura Maala,
Swarna Mukuta Shira Nayana Vishaalaa

O Ganesha (Vakratunda), the sole tusk you have on your elephant face is splendid, and your sacred trunk is well-adorned; the crescent-shaped triple mark on your forehead is as beautiful as the moon, and the celestials, mankind, and ascetics who behold your beauty cannot escape its spell.(Ganesh Chalisa text in Hindi and English translation with meaning)

Pustak Paani Kuthaar Trishuulam,
Modaka Bhoga Sugandhit Phuulam,
Sundara Piitaambar Tana Saajit,
Charana Paadukaa Muni Man Raajit

A garland of jewels adorns your bosom, the beauty of a full-blown lotus adorns your eyes, and a crown of gems adorns your head. You relieve your worshippers’ worries while holding a sacred axe and a lovely trident. Your favorites are sweet laddus among delicacies and fragrant petals among flowers.
*

Dhani Shiva Suvan Shadaanana Bhraataa,
Gaurii Lalan Vishva-Vikhyaata,
Riddhi Siddhi Tav Chanvar Sudhaare,
Mooshaka Vaahan Sohat Dvaare

Blessed are you, O Kaartikeya’s brother and Shiva and Gauri’s cherished son; stylishly dressed in a gorgeous yellow silken gown and wearing a pair of wooden sandals all studded with diamonds on your feet, you are the source of all the world’s benefits.
*

Kahaun Janma Shubh Kathaa Tumhari,
Ati Shuchi Paavan Mangalkaarii,
Ek Samay Giriraaj Kumaarii,
Putra Hetu Tapa Kiinhaa Bhaarii

Prosperity and achievement both wave royal whisks (chowries) over you (as if they were chowrie-burdars), and your vehicle, the mouse, adds to your radiance at your door. Because your life story is so odd and fascinating, who can attempt to express your magnificence, which defies description?
*

Bhayo Yagya Jaba Poorana Anupaa,
Taba Pahunchyo Tuma Dhari Dvija Rupaa,
Atithi Jaani Kay Gaurii Sukhaarii,

*

Shambhu Umaa Bahudaan Lutaavahin,
Sura Munijana Suta Dekhan Aavahin,
Lakhi Ati Aanand Mangal Saajaa,

In a flash of wrath, Shiva snatched up his trident and flung it at you, fueled by delusion. Your sensitive head, like the Shirisa flower, was severed and swiftly soared into the sky and vanished.
*

Nija Avaguna Gani Shani Man Maahiin,
Baalak Dekhan Chaahat Naahiin,

Kaa Karihau Shishu Mohi Dikhayii,
Nahin Vishvaasa Umaa Ura Bhayauu,
Shani Son Baalak Dekhan Kahyau

Gauri, although being the daughter of the mighty mountain King (celebrated for immobility), was moved and distressed to the point of falling to the ground and saying, “You have done me a great disfavour, my Lord; now go and fetch the severed head of my son from wherever you find it!”
