Jai Ganapati Sadguna Sadan,
Karivar Badan Kripal,
Vighna Haran Mangal Karan,
Jai Jai Girijaalaal
Glory, glory, all glory to you, O Ganesha; to you the entire universe pays respect. You are the exterminator and deliverer of all pairs of opposites (such as joy and sadness, birth and death, attraction and repulsion, and so on).
|| Chalisa ||
Jai Jai Jai Ganapati Ganaraaju,
Mangal Bharana Karana Shubha Kaajuu,
Jai Gajbadan Sadan Sukhdaata,
Vishva Vinaayaka Buddhi Vidhaataa
Glory to you, O Shambhu’s son and Gauri’s delight, because you are the destroyer of all impediments and the deliverer of all from the cycle of birth and death. Glory to you, O head of Shiva’s minions, bestower of delight on all your devotees, teacher of all and intellect operator!
VakraTunda Shuchi Shunda Suhaavana,
Tilaka Tripunda Bhaal Man Bhaavan,
Raajata Mani Muktana Ura Maala,
Swarna Mukuta Shira Nayana Vishaalaa
O Ganesha (Vakratunda), the sole tusk you have on your elephant face is splendid, and your sacred trunk is well-adorned; the crescent-shaped triple mark on your forehead is as beautiful as the moon, and the celestials, mankind, and ascetics who behold your beauty cannot escape its spell.(Ganesh Chalisa text in Hindi and English translation with meaning)
Pustak Paani Kuthaar Trishuulam,
Modaka Bhoga Sugandhit Phuulam,
Sundara Piitaambar Tana Saajit,
Charana Paadukaa Muni Man Raajit
A garland of jewels adorns your bosom, the beauty of a full-blown lotus adorns your eyes, and a crown of gems adorns your head. You relieve your worshippers’ worries while holding a sacred axe and a lovely trident. Your favorites are sweet laddus among delicacies and fragrant petals among flowers.
Dhani Shiva Suvan Shadaanana Bhraataa,
Gaurii Lalan Vishva-Vikhyaata,
Riddhi Siddhi Tav Chanvar Sudhaare,
Mooshaka Vaahan Sohat Dvaare
Blessed are you, O Kaartikeya’s brother and Shiva and Gauri’s cherished son; stylishly dressed in a gorgeous yellow silken gown and wearing a pair of wooden sandals all studded with diamonds on your feet, you are the source of all the world’s benefits.
Kahaun Janma Shubh Kathaa Tumhari,
Ati Shuchi Paavan Mangalkaarii,
Ek Samay Giriraaj Kumaarii,
Putra Hetu Tapa Kiinhaa Bhaarii
Prosperity and achievement both wave royal whisks (chowries) over you (as if they were chowrie-burdars), and your vehicle, the mouse, adds to your radiance at your door. Because your life story is so odd and fascinating, who can attempt to express your magnificence, which defies description?
Bhayo Yagya Jaba Poorana Anupaa,
Taba Pahunchyo Tuma Dhari Dvija Rupaa,
Atithi Jaani Kay Gaurii Sukhaarii,
Bahu Vidhi Sevaa Karii Tumhaarii
A demon masquerading as Shiva frequently visited there to deceive Gauri. To prevent his plan, Gauri, Shiva’s adored consort, constructed a celestial form from the scurf of her body.
Ati Prasanna Hvai Tum Vara Diinhaa,
Maatu Putra Hit Jo Tap Kiinhaa,
Milhii Putra Tuhi, Buddhi Vishaala,
Binaa Garbha Dhaarana Yahi Kaalaa
She asked her son to stand guard at the royal door, much like a doorkeeper. When Shiva arrived, he was denied entry into the residence because he was unidentified.
Gananaayaka Guna Gyaan Nidhaanaa,
Puujita Pratham Roop Bhagavaanaa,
Asa Kehi Antardhyaana Roop Hvai,
Palanaa Par Baalak Svaroop Hvai
Shiva inquired, “Who is your father?” You replied in a honey-sweet voice, “Hearken, sir, I am Gauri’s son; don’t go any further than this point.”
Lakhi Mukh Sukh Nahin Gauri Samaanaa,
Sakal Magan Sukha Mangal Gaavahin,
Nabha Te Suran Suman Varshaavahin
” O lord! Let me get my mother’s consent before I let you in; wrangling with a mere stripling like me will be futile.” Shivaat ignored your command and rushed towards the house, which irritated you so much that you threw down the gauntlet.
Shambhu Umaa Bahudaan Lutaavahin,
Sura Munijana Suta Dekhan Aavahin,
Lakhi Ati Aanand Mangal Saajaa,
Dekhan Bhii Aaye Shani Raajaa
In a flash of wrath, Shiva snatched up his trident and flung it at you, fueled by delusion. Your sensitive head, like the Shirisa flower, was severed and swiftly soared into the sky and vanished.
Nija Avaguna Gani Shani Man Maahiin,
Baalak Dekhan Chaahat Naahiin,
Girijaa Kachhu Man Bheda Badhaayo,
Utsava Mora Na Shani Tuhi Bhaayo
When Shiva entered the room where Gauri, the Mountain King’s daughter, was sitting, he inquired, “Tell me, Sati, how did you give birth to your son?”
Kahana Lage Shani Man Sakuchaai,
Kaa Karihau Shishu Mohi Dikhayii,
Nahin Vishvaasa Umaa Ura Bhayauu,
Shani Son Baalak Dekhan Kahyau
The riddle was solved after listening to the entire programme. Gauri, although being the daughter of the mighty mountain King (celebrated for immobility), was moved and distressed to the point of falling to the ground and saying, “You have done me a great disfavour, my Lord; now go and fetch the severed head of my son from wherever you find it!”
Padatahin Shani Drigakona Prakaashaa,
Baalak Sira Udi Gayo Aakaashaa,
Girajaa Girii Vikala Hvai Dharanii,
So Dukha Dashaa Gayo Nahin Varanii
Shiva, the expert in all skills, set out with Vishnu, but when they couldn’t find the head, they brought one of an elephant and placed it on the trunk, breathing life into it.(Ganesh Chalisa text in Hindi and English translation with meaning)
Haahaakaara Machyo Kailaashaa,
Shani Kiinhon Lakhi Suta Ko Naashaa,
Turat Garuda Chadhi Vishnu Sidhaaye,
Kaati Chakra So GajaShira Laaye
Lord Shiva gave you the name Shri Ganesha and bestowed upon you knowledge, wisdom, and immortality. You are the first among those who are worshipped, O Lord; you offer joy to the faithful, erase all obstacles, and cause the mind to function.
Baalak Ke Dhada Uupar Dhaarayo,
Praana Mantra Padhi Shankar Daarayo,
Pratham Poojya Buddhi Nidhi Vara Diinhe
Whoever remembers you before beginning on any quest completes all his tasks in the world. Without your all-forgiving grace, there is no security or well-being in the world.
Buddhi Pariikshaa Jab Shiva Kiinhaa,
Prithvii Kar Pradakshinaa Liinhaa,
Chale Shadaanana Bharami Bhulaai,
Rache Baithii Tum Buddhi Upaai
The moon’s face has been tainted by your curse, with the black reflection of the ground as it appears on the fourth day in the dazzling half of Bhaadrapada (Bhaado), which no one dares to gaze at. Shiva instructed you to circumnavigate the planet to put your strength and intelligence to the test.
Charana Maatu-Pitu Ke Dhara Liinhen,
Tinake Saat Pradakshina Kiinhen
Dhani Ganesha Kahi Shiva Hiye Harashyo,
Nabha Te Suran Suman Bahu Barse
While Sadmukha (your brother Kaartikeya) flew on his peacock, you chose an easier path: you drew the name Raama on the ground and circumnavigated it, despite your reservations.
Tumharii Mahima Buddhi Badaai,
Shesha Sahasa Mukha Sake Na Gaai,
Main Mati Heen Maliina Dukhaarii,
Karahun Kaun Vidhi Vinaya Tumhaarii
(With zeal) you clasped your parents’ feet and circumnavigated them seven times. Thus you were rewarded with the fruit of circumnavigating the earth, an achievement that caused the gods to shower you with flowers.
Bhajata ‘Raamsundara’ Prabhudaasaa,
Jaga Prayaaga Kakraa Durvaasaa,
Ab Prabhu Dayaa Deena Par Keejai,
Apnii Bhakti Shakti Kuchha Deejai
Sundardaasa, a follower of Raama, composed this hymn to Ganesha in forty verses while living in the hermitage of the sage Durvasa, much as the foremost among the adepts in the Shiva Purana had done.
