Story

Those who are familiar with the tradition do not consider Ganesha’s relationship with Kola Bou to be marital. According to Haridas Mitra, the Kola Bou is meant to be a symbolic summary of the nine sorts of leaves (nava patrika) that together constitute a sacred complex during Durga Puja.
The officiating priests who perform the rite attach a bundle of eight plants to the trunk of the plantain tree, and the Kola Bou is made up of all nine plants. Each of the nine plants has therapeutic benefits.
According to Martin-Dubost, the Kola Bou is the plant form of Durga rather than a bride or shakti of Ganesha. He relates the plant emblem to the festival rehearsal of Durga’s return of the buffalo demon’s blood to the earth so that the world’s order can be restored and lush flora can reappear. He associates Ganesha with this vegetation myth, noting that Astadasausadhisristi (Adaauadhisi, “Creator of the eighteen medicinal plants”) is a Ganesha name.
